A Carta Africana estabeleceu a Comissão Africana dos Direitos Humanos e dos Povos. A Comissão foi inaugurada a 02 de novembro de 1987 em Addis Abeba, Etiópia. O Secretariado da Comissão foi subsequentemente localizado em Banjul, Gâmbia.
