The Working Group on Extractive Industries, Environment and Human Rights Violations (WGEI) on 24 October 2019, as part of the Programme of the 65th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, held a public consultation on its Draft Background Study on Extractive Industries, Environment and Human Rights in Africa.
The Public Consultation was moderated by Commissioner Jamesina King, Member of the WGEI. WGEI Member Clement Voule, addressed the background of the draft Study Report and the process followed to arrive at the present draft. Commissioner Solomon Ayele Dersso, Chairperson of the WGEI, provided an outline and overview of the content of the Study. Thereafter the floor was opened to participants for comments. This consultation provided an opportunity to all stakeholders, including State Parties, National Human Rights Institutions and civil society organisations to participate and provide input in the process of developing the draft Study Report.
The Draft Study will be published online for further public input.
