Statement on Letter of Urgent Appeal to the Republic of South Africa

On 12 May 2020, the country rapporteur of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (African Commission) on the human rights situation of South Africa Commissioner Solomon Ayele Dersso, Chairperson of the African Commission, transmitted a letter of urgent appeal to the Republic of South Africa regarding enforcement of lockdown measures by security forces, the protection of women and girls during the lockdown, the socio-economic hardships facing large number of South Africans and the protection of the rights of vulnerable groups including refugees, asylum seekers and migrants in the context of the lockdown measures in force.
