Press Release on the First Joint Annual Meeting between the African Commission and the African Court

The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the African Commission) and the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the  Court), wish to inform the general public that it is holding its First Joint Annual Meeting in Algiers, Republic of Algeria, to discuss and brainstorm on ways of enhancing their collaborative partnership, address challenges in the protection of human and peoples’ rights and strengthen their bilateral cooperation based on common shared values. The Joint Meeting is attended by nine Commissioners from the African Commissioners and five Judges from the African Court.

The July 2012 Joint Annual Meeting which is co-chaired by the Chairperson of the African Commission, Honorable Commissioner Catherine Dupe Atoki and the President of the African Court, Honorable Justice Gerard Niyungeko, follows the two meetings held between the bureaux of the two institutions on 8 March 2011 and 24 July 2o12, in Lilongwe, Malawi and Algiers, Algeria, respectively. 

As the principal organs mandated to securing human rights in Africa, the two institutions through the Joint Meeting hope to strengthen their complementary relationship and promote the process of a constructive dialogue with a view to seeking concrete ways of enhancing their complimentary relationship and the African human rights landscape.
