7 June 2019, Banjul, The Gambia - The Secretariat of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the Secretariat) wishes to inform the general public that the Special Rapporteur on Prisons, Conditions of Detention and Policing in Africa- Honourable Commissioner Maria Teresa Manuela of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the Commission) will be organizing aSensitization/Training Workshop of Senior Officers of the Angolan National Police and Prison Services on ACHPR’s Guidelines on Conditions of Arrest, Police Custody and Pre-Trial Detention in Africa, its Implementation Toolkits and the Principles on the Decriminalization of Petty Offences in Africa, from 10 to 11 June 2019, in Luanda, Angola.
The Workshop, which is part of the promotion mandate of the Commission, is being organized within the framework of Article 45 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (African Charter).
The Sensitization/Training Workshop is being organised to sensitize Law Enforcement Officers on the Commission ’s Guidelines on Conditions of Arrest, Police Custody and Pre-Trial Detention in Africa, its Implementation Toolkits and the Principles on the Decriminalization of Petty Offences in Africa; and build their capacity in monitoring compliance with human rights standards by key stakeholders within the criminal justice system in Angola.
The Workshop will be attended by Honourable Commissioner Maria Teresa Manuela, Special Rapporteur on Prisons, Conditions of Detention and Policing in Africa; Representatives of the Judiciary; Police and Prisons Services; Office of the Ombudsman; MINJUD (CIERNDH) and Civil Society Organisations. The Workshop will be assisted by Members of the Commission’s Secretariat.
