Press Release on the Induction Workshop for Expert Members of the Committee for the Prevention of Torture in Africa (CPTA)

The Secretariat of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the Secretariat) is pleased to inform the general public that theCommittee for the Prevention of Torture in Africa (CPTA or the Committee) organised anInduction Workshop for Expert Members of the Committee for the Prevention of Torture in Africa, from 6 – 7 December 2019, in Tunis, Tunisia.

During its 65th Ordinary Session, held from 21 October to 10 November 2019, in Banjul, The Gambia, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the Commission) appointed four (4) Expert Members to the Committee. 

The overall objective of the Induction Workshop was to introduce new Expert Members to the role of the Commission in preventing and responding to torture and other ill-treatment on the continent, with a specific focus on the role and mandate of the CPTA.  The Workshop further aimed to examine CPTA’s approach and working methods in its mandate delivery; discuss key regional and international standards on the prohibition and prevention of torture; highlight the Commission’s jurisprudence on Article 5 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights; identify key CPTA partners as well as Special Mechanisms of the Commission with related mandates; highlight the role and responsibility of Members of the Committee; and identify areas for improvement in CPTA’s mandate delivery. Finally, the Committee considered and adopted its 2020 Annual Work Plan. 

The following Members of the CPTA participated in the Workshop: Commissioner Hatem Essaiem (CPTA Chairperson), Commissioner Maria Teresa Manuela (Member and Special Rapporteur on Prisons, Conditions of Detention, and Policing in Africa),Ms Onyema Afulukwe (Expert Member), Ms Sana Bousbih (Expert Member), and Mr Serges Frederic Mboumegne Dzesseu (Expert Member).
