Hon. Lucy Asuagbor
Justice Lucy Asuagbor, is a Cameroonian and one of the current serving Commissioners of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights since 2010. She is Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa; a Member of the Committee on the Prevention of Torture in Africa; a Member of the Committee For The Protection Of The Rights Of PLHIV And Those At Risk, Vulnerable To And Affected By HIV In Africa (HIV Committee); and Chairperson of the Working Group on Communications. She was formerly Chairperson of the HIV Committee; a Member of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations/Communities in Africa; and Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders. She is the Country Rapporteur responsible for the promotion of human rights in Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda, Uganda, and Sierra Leone. She has also been responsible for Benin and Guinea Bissau.
In her personal capacity, she is currently a Judge at the Supreme Court of Yaoundé, Cameroon. She holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of Lagos-Nigeria, a Masters Degree in International Law from the International Maritime Law Institute –Malta, and a Diploma from the School of Magistracy –Yaoundé.
Madam Asuagbor has had a long professional career in the Magistracy, serving the Government of Cameroon in various capacities, including as a State Counsel, Vice President of the Court of Appeal and Chief Justice of the Court of Appeal, in the South West Region in Buea, Cameroon. She is also a Member of the Higher Judicial Council.
She is a keen and dedicated human rights activist and is affiliated to numerous organizations engaged in the promotion and protection of human rights. Her goal is to contribute tangibly towards the amelioration of human rights on the African Continent.
