Introduction
1. Within the framework of the commemorative activities to mark 2016 as the “African human rights year, with a particular focus on the rights of women”, the Committee for the Prevention of Torture in Africa (the Committee or CPTA), a Special Mechanism of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the Commission), is organising this Panel.
2. The objective of the Panel is to showcase the human rights situation of women in Africa as seen from the prism of CPTA’s mandate of preventing and eradicating torture and other ill-treatment, highlighting the achievements made, the challenges remaining, as well as the prospects going forward. During this Panel, CPTA also seeks to engage stakeholders, including State Parties, civil society, partners and other key human rights actors to ensure that the proceedings are as interactive as possible.
