Press Release on the Meeting of the Working Group on the Death Penalty in Africa

The Secretariat of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) wishes to inform the general public that it will be organising a meeting of its Working Group on the Death Penalty from 7 to 9 November 2010, in Banjul, The Gambia.

The meeting, which is part of the ACHPR’s promotional mandate, is being organised in accordance with Article 45 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and also in order to give effect to ACHPR /Res.79 (XXXVIII) 05,that requires the Working Group to, amongst other things, develop a Strategic Plan(s), including a practical and legal framework on the abolition of the Death Penalty; and collect information and continue to monitor the situation of the application of the Death Penalty in African States. 

The Meeting of the Working Group is intended to map out the current work of the Working Group and to finalize the draft document of the Working Group on the ‘Question of the Death Penalty in Africa’, with a view to having the document ready for presentation to the ACHPR.

Commissioner Zainabo Sylvie Kayitesi, Member of the ACHPR and Chairperson of the Working Group on Death Penalty in Africa and Commissioner Mumba Malila, Vice-Chairperson of the ACHPR and Member of the Working Group on the Death Penalty in Africa, will lead the discussions. The expert members of the Working Group, Mme. Alya Cherif Chammari, Professor Philip Iya, and Professor Carlson Anyangwe, as well as some staff members of the Secretariat will be in attendance.
