In the execution of its mandate under Article 45 (1) (b) to ‘formulate and lay down principles and rules aimed at solving legal problems relating to human and peoples’ rights and fundamental freedoms upon which African Governments may base their legislations” the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the Commission) adopted ACHPR/Res.633 (LXXXIII) 2025 on developing General Comments on the protection and promotion of the right to environment in Africa at its 83rd ordinary session.
To those ends, and in accordance with Rule 25(3) of the 2020 Rules of Procedure, the Commission through the Working Group on Extractive Industries, environment and human rights violations in Africa (WGEI) seeks to focus its Intersession report on the right to a general satisfactory environment favourable to their development. This thematic report will enhance the Commission’s efforts in the development of the General Comment pursuant to ACHPR/Res.633 (LXXXIII) 2025. Inter alia, the report will allow for a preliminary consultation while mapping out challenges, developments and perspectives on the right to environment in Africa.
The WGEI therefore kindly invites inputs from all stakeholders on the right to a general satisfactory environment to inform its thematic report. Stakeholders are requested to submit their input by the 1st of September 2025 via email to au-banjul@africanunion.org (copying mayota@africanunion.org and xabaz@africanunion.org ) or via courier to the address below:
