The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Right’s Country Rapporteur for the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa, Honourable Commissioner Lucy Asuagbor ( the Special Rapporteur), while monitoring the kidnapping  of the Chibok girls by the Boka Haram militants in Nigeria, continues to strongly condemn acts of violence perpetrated by Boko Haram that have resulted in a series of human rights violations inflicted on the people of Nigeria, and in particular its women and girls.

The Special Rapporteur applauds the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for its unwavering efforts and determination that have resulted in the release of a further 82 Chibok Girls, who were part of the remaining Chibok Girls abducted by the Boko Haram militants in April 2014. The Special Rapporteur also commends the unity and concerted efforts of all stakeholders in particular, the government of Switzerland and the International Committee of the Red Cross, who have worked diligently with the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to ensure their release.

The Special Rapporteur however continues to advocate for the release of the remaining Chibok girls and CALLS on the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to continue to intensity its efforts and negotiation tactics in ensuring that ALL the remaining Chibok Girls in captivity, are released and reunited with their respective families.

The Special Rapporteur takes this opportunity to once again remind the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria of its obligations under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, the Protocol to the African Charter on the Rights of Women in Africa (Maputo Protocol) and other regional and International human rights instrument that it is a party to, and urges the Government to ensure that the released Chibok girls are rehabilitated and integrated into the society.
