15 November 2023, Banjul, The Gambia – The Secretariat of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the Secretariat) wishes to inform the general public that the Chairperson of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations/Communities and Minorities in Africa, and the Working Group itself, have organized a validation meeting for consideration of the study on the Impact of COVID-19 on Indigenous Peoples in Africa, which will be held in Windhoek, Namibia from 20-21 November 2023.

The Study, which is part of the promotion mandate of the Commission, is situated in the framework of Article 45 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the African Charter), and funded by the European Union (EU) under the EU/AGA Support Project 2021-2023.

The meeting is an opportunity to specifically assess the extent to which the study, conducted by experts of the Working Group, provides the basis for evidence-based recommendations to enhance the resilience of indigenous communities.

The meeting is attended by the Honourable Members of the Working Group, various human rights stakeholders from across the African continent, and members of the Secretariat.
