The Secretariat of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the African Commission) wishes to inform the general public that on the invitation of the Government of the Republic of Zambia, the African Commission will undertake a human rights promotion mission to the Zambia, from 14 - 18 April, 2008.
This mission, which is part of the African Commission’s promotional mandate, is aimed at encouraging dialogue between the African Commission and the Republic of Zambia, and to among other things, exchange views with major human rights stakeholders on ways and means of enhancing the enjoyment of human rights in the country.
The Mission will be undertaken by Commissioner Commissioner Faith Pansy Tlakula, Member of the African Commission responsible for the promotion of human rights in Zambia, and the African Commission’s Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression in Africa. She will be accompanied by Dr. Robert Wundeh Eno, Legal Officer for Protection, at the Secretariat of the African Commission.
During the Mission, the delegation will meet with a cross-section of human rights actors in the country, especially those working in the field of human rights: including in particular, relevant government officials, members of parliament, members of the judiciary, the police, civil society organisations, political party leaders, and other individuals or institutions capable of enlightening the African Commission on the human rights situation in Zambia.
At the end of the mission, the preliminary findings will be discussed with the relevant government authorities. A Press Conference will also be held to brief the press and the general public on these findings.
