Banjul, 27 July 2024 - The African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights recently concludes a benchmarking mission to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) in Washington DC.
The visit which took place from July 10 to July 16, 2024 focused on mutual exchanges on best practices aimed at strengthening the working methods and capacities of the two institutions in the promotion and protection of human rights, in accordance with the mandates and objectives set by their respective founding instruments.
The visit which also served as a platform for the two institutions to engage with some civil society organizations working in the African and Inter-American human rights systems, allowed the two commissions to have diverse exchanges on challenges to enforcement of human rights in their respective regions, as well as reflections on potential solutions.
This meeting concluded with a Joint Declaration on collaborations for better promotion and protection of human rights through the establishment of focal points, exchange of public information and best practices in the field of human rights, and the convening of annual high-level dialogues and other mutually agreed follow-up meetings and initiatives in furtherance of institutional alliance.
The delegation of the African Commission comprised of its Chairperson - Commissioner Rémy Ngoy Lumbu, the Vice-Chairperson – Commissioner Janet Ramatoulie Sallah-Njie, as well as Commissioner Hatem Essaiem, Commissioner Mudford Z. Mwandenga, Commissioner Marie Louise Abomo, Commissioner Ourveena Geereesha Topsy-Sonoo, Commissioner Idrissa Sow, and Commissioner Litha Musyimi-Ogana; and selected staff of the Secretariat, led by the Executive Secretary Mrs. Abiola Idowu Ojo.
