Banjul, 30 June 2023 - The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) is organizing a two-day Webinar on the Popularization of Soft Laws under the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa (SRRWA). The Webinar is being convened by Hon. Commissioner Janet Ramatoulie Sallah-Njie, the SRRWA, from 6 to 7 June 2023.
Following the adoption of the Maputo Protocol, the ACHPR has committed to adopting a wide range of soft laws on the provisions of the Protocol, which includes General Comments and Guidelines. The major aim of adopting these soft laws was to elaborate on some provisions of the Protocol that were considered ambiguous and guide States in their implementation of the Protocol at the domestic level. Despite this, the implementation and use of soft laws by States, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and other Stakeholders remain challenging. The SRRWA is therefore convening this Webinar, with the overall Objective of sensitizing and creating awareness on the soft laws of the Special Mechanism towards the promotion and protection of the rights of women and girls in Africa, as well as the domestication of the Maputo Protocol to be widely known and utilised. To achieve this objective, the Webinar seeks to discuss the content and importance of the soft laws under the mandate of the SRRWA, best practices and challenges associated with their domestication and implementation, and lessons from the UN System, among others.
The Webinar will bring together State Representatives from all the regions on the continent, representatives from the AU Organs, Regional and Sub-Regional Organizations, National Human Rights Institutions, Non-Governmental Organisations, CSOs, UN Agencies; Academia and other stakeholders.
