Press Statement on the meeting of the Chairperson of the Commission with the Chairperson of the African Union Commission

The Chairperson of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the African Commission), Commissioner Solomon Ayele Dersso, along with the members of the delegation of the ACHPR to the AU summit met with H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC).

The delegation of the African Commission discussed with AUC Commission on the work of the African Commission, on enhancing support for the African Commission and elevating the engagement of the African Commission both in its immediate role on the promotion and protection of human and peoples’ rights and in the works of the African Union (AU), including its flagship projects.

During the meeting, the African Commission Chairperson underscored the critical role of the African Commission and the rights enshrined in the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights for achieving the objectives of the AU and Agenda 2063. H.E. the AUC Chairperson reiterated the importance of the work of the African Commission and the need for enhancing the use and integration of the work of the African Commission into the wider AU policy processes.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Commissioner Dersso expressed the appreciation of the African Commission for the meeting with and the support of the AUC Chairperson and extended his invitation for the AUC Chairperson to come to the next ordinary session of the African Commission scheduled to take place in Banjul, The Gambia for the plan to lay the foundation stone of the headquarters of the African Commission.  

The African Commission applauds H.E. Mahamat for his strong support to the Commission and for his advocacy for respect of human and peoples in Africa. Commissioner Dersso also looks forward to working closely with him for the realization of the ideals of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, including in the context of the AU theme of the year on silencing the guns.
