Expert Meeting on the Draft African Declaration on the Promotion of the Role of Human Rights Defenders and their Protection in Africa

07 April 2026, Banjul, The Gambia – The Secretariat of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (the Secretariat) wishes to inform the general public that the Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders, Focal Point on Reprisals and Focal Point on Judicial Independence (the Special Rapporteur) of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (the Commission),  is organizing an expert meeting on the draft African Declaration on Promoting the Role of Human Rights Defenders and their Protection in Africa (the Declaration), from 9 to 11 April 2026, in Dakar, Republic of Senegal.

This meeting is part of the Commission's advocacy mandate, in accordance with Article 45 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights as well as Resolution ACHPR/Res.432(LXV) 2019 which mandates the Special Rapporteur to develop an African Declaration on the Promotion of the Role of Human Rights Defenders and their Protection in Africa.

The meeting will bring together representatives of government institutions, experts and members of international organizations, national human rights institutions and civil society, the academia as well as staff members of the Secretariat of the Commission.  

The objective of the meeting will be to consider the Draft Declaration before the document is submitted to the Commission for consideration and adoption.
