PRESS RELEASE: Promotion Mission to the Republic of Namibia


9 June, Banjul, The Gambia – The African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (the Commission) informs the public that, upon authorization of the Government of the Republic of Namibia, a Promotion Mission will be undertaken by the Commission to promote human rights in the country, from 13 to 16 June 2023.

The Mission, which is part of the Commission’s promotion mandate, is being undertaken in accordance with Article 45 (1) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the African Charter), with the objective of engaging with relevant stakeholders to among other things, exchange views on ways and means of enhancing the enjoyment of human rights in the country. 

The Mission will be undertaken by Hon. Commissioner Janet Ramatoulie Sallah-Njie, Member of the Commission responsible for the promotion of human rights in Namibia, and the Commission’s Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa. She will be accompanied by a Senior Legal Officer at the Secretariat of the Commission.

During the Mission, the delegation will meet with a cross-section of human rights actors in the country, especially those working in the field of human rights: including in particular, relevant government officials, members of parliament, members of the judiciary, the police, Civil Society Organisations, political party leaders, and other individuals or institutions capable of enlightening the Commission on the human rights situation in Namibia.

At the end of the mission, the preliminary findings will be discussed with the relevant government authorities. A Press Conference will also be held to brief the press and the general public on these findings.
