The Secretariat of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights wishes to inform its publics that at the invitation of the Government of the Republic of Cameroon, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the African Commission) will undertake a Mission to the Republic of Cameroon from 1 to 7 February 2011.

The Mission, which is part of the African Commission’s promotion mandate, is being undertaken in accordance with Article 45(1) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, with the objective of engaging with relevant stakeholders to, among other things, exchange views on ways and means of enhancing the enjoyment of human rights in the country.

The Mission will be undertaken by Honorable Commissioner Reine Alapini-Gansou, Chairperson of the Africa Commission and Commissioner responsible for the promotion of human rights in Cameroon, and Honourable Commissioner Lucy Asuagbor, the African Commission’s Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders in Africa. The Commissioners will be accompanied by a Legal Officer at the Secretariat of the African Commission.

During the Mission, the African Commission’s delegation will meet with authorities from the relevant government ministries, civil society organisations, as well as a cross-section of human rights actors in the country and other individuals and institutions capable of enlightening the African Commission on the human rights situation in Cameroon.

At the end of the Mission, the preliminary findings will be discussed with the relevant authorities in the Government of the Republic of Cameroon. A Press Conference will also be held. Thereafter, a Report of the Mission will be tabled before the next Ordinary Session of the African Commission, for consideration and adoption.
