The Secretariat of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights wishes to inform the general public that on the invitation of the Government of the Republic of Mauritius, the African Commission will undertake a mission to the country from 21 – 25 August 2006.
This visit which is part of the African Commission’s promotional mandate is aimed at promoting dialogue between the Commission and the country, and exchanging views with major stakeholders on ways and means of enhancing the enjoyment of human rights in the country.
The Mission will be undertaken by Justice Sanji Monageng, Member of the African Commission responsible for the promotion of human rights in the Republic of Mauritius. She will be accompanied by Ms. Fiona Adolu, Legal Officer at the Secretariat of the African Commission.
During the Mission, the delegation will meet and hold talks with a cross-section of human rights actors in the country, especially those working in the field of human rights promotion: including in particular, relevant government ministries, members of parliament, members of the judiciary, the police, civil society organisations, political party leaders, and other individuals or institutions capable of enlightening the African Commission on the human rights situation in the country.
At the end of the mission, the preliminary findings shall be discussed with the relevant government authorities including the Head of State. A Press Conference will also be held to brief the press and the general public on these findings.
