Through Resolution 143 adopted during the 45th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the Commission), held in Banjul, the Gambia in May 2009, the Commission established a “Working Group on the Rights of Older Persons and People with Disabilities”.
The Working Group is composed of four members of the Commission, and five expert members, and is mandated to:
(i) hold comprehensive brainstorming sessions to articulate the rights of older persons and people with disabilities;
(ii) facilitate and expedite comparative research on the various aspects of human rights of older persons and people with disabilities on the continent, including their socio-economic rights;
(iii) collect data on older persons and people with disabilities to ensure proper mainstreaming of their rights in the policies and development programmes of Member States;
(iv) identify good practices to be replicated in Member States;
(v) submit a detailed Report to the African Commission at each Ordinary Session.
An opening has occurred for an expert member of this Working Group, which the Commission is desirous of filling. Consequently, the Commission is inviting nominations from Member States of the African Union, National Human Rights Institutions, Non-Governmental Organisations and other interested individuals and institutions.
Nominees are required to have expertise as well as demonstrable experience in issues surrounding the promotion and protection of the rights of persons with disabilities and persons with disabilities from Member States of the African Union are particularly encouraged to apply.
Nominations should be accompanied by a cover letter and curriculum vitae of the proposed candidates; and should be sent to au-banjul@africa-union.org.
Proposed names should be received no later than 25 March 2014 as the Commission intends to nominate the member during its 55th Ordinary Session scheduled to take place from 28 April to 12 May 2014.
