The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the Commission) expresses its deep concern regarding the attempted military coup in the Republic of Benin and firmly condemns any action aimed at undermining the country’s constitutional order and democratic governance.
The Commission recalls that institutional stability, the rule of law, and respect for constitutional principles are essential conditions for the protection and effective enjoyment of human rights. Unconstitutional changes of government, including attempted coups, pose serious risks to the security of populations, hinder the protection of fundamental rights, and undermine the democratic progress achieved in Benin and across the continent.
The Commission calls on all concerned parties to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms and to ensure the safety and protection of civilians. It further encourages the Beninese authorities to take all necessary measures to preserve calm, ensure respect for the rule of law, and fulfil their obligations under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
The Commission reaffirms its solidarity with the people of Benin and stands ready to cooperate with national authorities, regional mechanisms, and other relevant stakeholders in support of efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and promote peace and security.
Honorable Dr. Idrissa Sow,
Chairperson of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights,
Honorable Hatem Essaiem
Vice-Chairperson of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights Country Rapporteur for the Republic of Benin
