Press Statement: Validation Workshop for the Joint Study on Challenges of Litigating Women’s and Girls’ Rights before African Union Human Rights Organs from 23-24 September 2025 – Physical (Accra, Ghana)

Banjul, 16 September 2025 – The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) is pleased to inform all stakeholders of the following event: Validation Workshop for the Joint Study on Challenges of Litigating Women’s and Girls’ Rights before African Union Human Rights Organs.

The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) will in partnership with the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through the GIZ-African Union AWARE Project convene a two-day Validation Workshop (closed) for the Joint Study on Challenges of Litigating Women’s and Girls’ Rights before African Union Human Rights Organs. The Workshop will be convened in Accra, Ghana, from 23-24 September 2025.

On August 2, 2024, during its 80th Ordinary Session, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) adopted Resolution ACHPR/Res.594 (LXXX) 2024 for a joint analytical study on challenges of litigating the rights of women and girls at the AU Human Rights Organs. In direct response to this Resolution, the ACHPR, in collaboration with the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR) and the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC), commissioned the joint analytical study. The study aimed to investigate the underlying factors that impede women and girls’ access to regional justice mechanisms. The workshop will serve as an essential forum where various stakeholders and experts will critically assess the research, ensuring its factual accuracy, methodological robustness, and practical relevance.

The Workshop will bring together representatives of AU Human Rights Organs – ACHPR, AfCHPR, and ACERWC, members of the study’s Technical Reference Group, and representatives of selected partners and key stakeholders.
