Press Release: Webinar on Informal Economy Work and the Right to work in Africa

26 May 2023, Banjul, The Gambia - The Secretariat of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the Secretariat) wishes to inform the general public that, the Working Group on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (WG-ECOSOC) of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), is organizing a Webinar in collaboration with the Solidarity Center, on Tuesday 30 May 2023 from 12:00hrs – 14:00hrs (GMT); 15:00hrs – 17:00hrs (EAT); 14:00hrs – 16:00hrs (SAT).

The Webinar is being organised in accordance with Article 45(1) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the African Charter) and pursuant to Article 15 of the same Charter, in line with the Working Group’s mandate to formulate and propose principles and guidelines on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, to the ACHPR.

The overall objective of the Webinar is to sensitize and create awareness on the cause and consequences of informal economic work, in light of the respect, protection and realization of human and peoples’ rights on the African continent.

More specifically, the Webinar will:

  • Explore underlying reasons behind the widespread non-recognition of worker rights for the majority of workers in the African context, especially marginalized and vulnerable groups like women and children, who remain excluded from collective labour rights, the rights to non-discrimination at work, to work in just and favourable conditions and to social protection;
  • Consider recent advances in both legislation and case law at the national and regional level on workers in the informal economy;
  • Identify potential solutions and propose a way forward within the African Human Rights instruments and institutions.

The Webinar will bring together State Representatives from all the regions on the continent, representatives from the African Union Organs and Sub-Regional Organizations, National Human Rights Institutions, Non-Governmental Organisations, UN Organs, Academia and other stakeholders.
