Statement on Letter of Urgent Appeal to the Republic of Kenya

On 12 August 2020, the country rapporteur of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (African Commission) on the human rights situation in Kenya and the Chairpersons of the Working Group on the Rights of Indigenous Populations/Communities and the Working Group on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, transmitted a joint letter of urgent appeal to His Excellency, President Uhuru Kenyatta, the President of the Republic of Kenya, regarding various reports of evictions that have taken place in Kenya in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, affecting in particular, marginalized communities, notably the Ogiek and the Sengwer communities, as well as people in the Kariobangi North Sewerage settlement.

The Commission looks forward to urgent positive action and collaboration of the Republic of Kenya.
