The Secretariat of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights wishes to inform the public that the Working Group on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in Africa of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights will organise a regional workshop on the right to education for all in Algiers, Algeria, from 25 to 29 November 2013.
As part of the workshop, the members of the Working Group will hold working sessions with Algerian education authorities and will visit some Algerian academic institutions.
The workshop will be attended by representatives of ministries of education and organisations working in the education sector from the following countries:
- Algeria;
- Burkina Faso;
- Chad;
- Guinea-Conakry;
- Mali;
- Mauritania;
- Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic;
- Senegal; and
- Tunisia.
The workshop will also be attended by the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Education and representatives of UNESCO, UNICEF, UNDP and other inter-governmental organisations.
The overall objective of the regional workshop is to promote the right to education for all on the continent in order to facilitate access to knowledge for all Africans and to make the right to education for all a priority area in the development policies of African countries. The specific objectives are as follows:
- Explore the education system of the countries participating in the workshop;
- Identify and share best practices;
- Identify challenges to the right to education; and
- Make recommendations.
The report of the workshop will be published.
