Second meeting of the Working Group on Extractive Industries, Environment and Human Rights Violations in Africa

The Secretariat of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the Secretariat) wishes to inform the general public that, from 20 to 22 March 2012, it will be organizing the second meeting of its Working Group on Extractive Industries, Environment and Human Rights Violations in Africa (the Working Group) in Pretoria, South Africa.

This meeting, which is part of the promotion mandate of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (The African Commission) is being organized within the framework of Article 45 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and Resolution ACHPR/Res148(XLVI)09 which calls on the Working Group to, inter alia, examine the impact of extractive industries in Africa within the context of the African Charter.

Honourable Commissioner Pacifique Manirakiza, Chairperson of the Working Group will lead the deliberations, while a Legal Officer from the Secretariat of the African Commission will facilitate the Group’s work.
