Press Release on the 1st Meeting of the Working Group on Extractive Industries, Environment and Human Rights Violations in Africa

The Secretariat of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the Secretariat) wishes to inform the general public that it will be organizing the first meeting of its Working Group on Extractive Industries, Environment and Human Rights Violations in Africa (the Working Group) from 28 to 30 November 2011, in Nairobi, Republic of Kenya.

This meeting, which is part of the promotion mandate of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights is being organized within the framework of Article 45 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and ACHPR/Res148(XLVI)09 which calls on the Working Group to, inter aliaexamine the impact of extractive industries in Africa within the context of the African Charter.

The overall objective of the meeting is to map out a Work Plan for the Working Group to effectively carry out its mandate.

The meeting will be attended by Honourable Commissioner Pacifique Manirakiza, Chairperson of the Working Group, and Honourable Commissioner Kayitesi Zainabo Sylvie, the Vice-Chairperson of the African Commission, as well as expert members of the Working Group.

The meeting will be assisted by a Legal Officer from the Secretariat.
