Press Release for the Promotional Visit to the Republic of Tunisia

30 June 2010, Banjul, The Gambia - The Secretariat of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights wishes to inform the general public that at the invitation of the Government of the Republic of Tunisia, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the ACHPR) will undertake a Prison Mission to the Republic of Tunisia from 10-14 July 2010.
The Mission, which is part of the ACHPR’s promotion mandate, is being undertaken in accordance with Article 45 (1) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, with the objective of engaging with relevant stakeholders to among other things, exchange views on ways and means of enhancing the enjoyment of human rights in the country.
The Mission will be undertaken by Commissioner Catherine Dupe Atoki, the ACHPR’s Special Rapporteur on Prisons and Conditions of Detention in Africa and Chairperson of Committee for the Prevention of Torture in Africa. She will be accompanied by a Legal Officer at the Secretariat of the African Commission.
During the Mission, the delegation will visit various prisons; meet with a cross-section of human rights actors in the country, especially those working in the field of human rights: including in particular, relevant government officials, civil society organisations, and other individuals or institutions capable of enlightening the ACHPR on the human rights situation in Tunisia.
At the end of the Mission, the preliminary findings will be discussed with the relevant authorities in the Tunisian government and a Press Conference will also be held to brief the press and the general public on these findings. Thereafter, a report of the Mission will be tabled before the next Session of the ACHPR, for consideration and adoption.
