Press Release for the Promotional Mission to the Republic of Benin

The Secretariat of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights wishes to inform the general public that, at the invitation of the Government of the Republic of Benin, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the African Commission) will undertake a Promotional Mission to the Republic of Benin from 25 - 29 August 2008.

The Mission, which is part of the Commission’s promotion mandate, is being undertaken in accordance with Article 45 (1) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, with the objective of engaging with relevant stakeholders to among other things, exchange views on ways and means of enhancing the enjoyment of human rights in the country.

The Mission will be undertaken by Commissioner Yeung Kam Jaohn Yeung Sik Yuen, Member of the African Commission responsible for the promotion of human rights in Benin, and the African Commission’s Focal Point on the Rights of Older Persons. He will be accompanied by Dr. Robert Eno and Mr. Nadjita Francis Ngarhodjim, Legal Officers at the Secretariat of the African Commission.

During the Mission, the delegation will meet with a cross-section of human rights actors in the country, especially those working in the field of human rights, including in particular, relevant government officials, members of parliament, members of the judiciary, the police, civil society organisations, political party leaders, and other individuals or institutions capable of enlightening the African Commission on the human rights situation in Benin.

At the end of the mission, the preliminary findings will be discussed with the relevant government authorities. A Press Conference will also be held to brief the press and the general public on these findings.
