      Theme: Access to Information and Freedom of Expression in Africa

Introduction:

1.    Within the framework of the commemorative activities to mark 2016 as the “African human rights year, with a particular focus on the rights of women,” the Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression and Access to Information in Africa is organizing panel discussions on Article 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the African Charter).

2.     Specifically, the objective of the panel discussion is to discuss issues related to freedom of expression and access to information in Africa. With regards to Article 9(1) of the African Charter on access to information (ATI), the Special Rapporteur will hold a brief panel discussion on “how ATI can contribute to the enjoyment of women’s rights in Africa.”

3.     Regarding Article 9(2) of the African Charter on freedom of expression, the Special Rapporteur will hold a brief panel discussion on “the coverage of women in the media industry.” Additionally, the issue of the safety of female journalists will be highlighted.

Panelists:

o    Commissioner Pansy Tlakula, the Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression and Access to Information in Africa;

o    NGO Representative to present research on Gender in the Media: “the coverage of women in the media industry.”

o    Testimony by female journalist.
