Panel Discussion on” Women's rights, HIV and health in AfricaProgress, Challenges and perspectives”.

Organized by the African Commission’s Committee on the Protection of The Rights of People Living with HIV (PLHIV) and those at Risk, Vulnerable to and Affected by HIV (the Committee)

I.              Introduction:

1.     Within the framework of the commemorative activities to mark 2016 as the “African human rights year, with a particular focus on the rights of women,” the Committee on the Protection of The Rights of People Living with HIV (PLHIV) and those at Risk, Vulnerable to and Affected by HIV (the Committee) is organizing panel discussions on “Women's rights, HIV and health in Africa: Progress, Challenges and perspectives”.

2.     The Panel will trace developments in the realization of the rights of women living with HIV in Africa and highlight the challenges faced in the promotion and protection of their rights. In light of the challenges, the interactive discussions will come up with recommendations for a better promotion and protection of the rights of women living with HIV.

-          Ms. Nyasha Chingore, Head of Sexual and Reproductive Rights Programme, Southern Africa Litigation Centre

-          Dr. Offia-Coulibaly Madiarra, Executive Director of Alliance Côte d’Ivoire

10:30-10:40             General remarks and Overview of the work done by the Committee regarding the women rights and HIV in Africa by Commissioner Soyata Maiga (10 minutes);

10:40-10:50       Ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030: Issues and considerations

from a women's rights perspective by Ms. Sirra Ndow (10 minutes);

10: 50-11:00            HIV and women's rights in Africa: key insights on progress and challenges from draft study of the HIV Committee of the African Commission by Ms. NyashaChingore (10 minutes);

11:00 – 11:15                 TEA/COFFEE BREAK 

 

11:15- 11:25            Prevention of HIV transmissions from mother to child by Dr Offia-Coulibaly Madiarra (10 minutes).

11:25 – 12:05    Interactive discussion moderated by the Committee’s Chairperson
