Statement on the Meeting of the Working Group on Older Persons and Persons with Disabilities in Africa 5 March 2015, Banjul, The Gambia

The Working Group on Older Persons and Persons with Disabilities in Africa (the Working Group) held a three day Meeting in Banjul, The Gambia, from 2 to 4 March 2015.

The Meeting was chaired by Commissioner Lawrence M. Mute and was attended by the following Members of the Working Group: Dr Nadia Abdel-Wahab El-Afify, Dr Elly Macha, Dr Tavengwa Machekano Nhongo and Mr Kudakwashe Dube.

The main purpose of the Meeting was to consider the comments, suggestions and inputs made on the Draft Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Africa (the Protocol) by stakeholders, with a view to finalising the Draft Protocol.

During the Meeting, the Working Group extensively discussed all submissions made by various stakeholders on the Draft Protocol and adopted a revised draft of the Protocol which will be submitted for the consideration of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights at its 56th Ordinary Session to be held from 21 April– 7 May 2015 in Banjul, The Gambia.

The Working Group thanked all the stakeholders who had sent submissions on the Draft Protocol to the Working Group.
