Banjul, 04 July 2024 - The Chairperson of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR), Honourable Commissioner Remy Ngoy Lumbu, will lead a delegation of ACHPR Commissioners and Staff Members on a benchmarking visit to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), in Washington DC, from 11-16 July, 2024.
This visit signifies the shared dedication of both regional bodies to uphold and advance human rights within their respective continents. The visit, which is part of the promotional mandate of the Commission, is being organized within the framework of Article 45 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
As the principal regional human rights organ of the African Union, the ACHPR recognizes the immense value of this mission in fostering closer collaboration, exchanging best practices, and deepening mutual understanding with the IACHR. Both Commissions aim to enhance their capacities in safeguarding human rights and promoting the rule of law by engaging in constructive dialogue and sharing insights.
Throughout the mission, the ACHPR delegation will participate in meetings, consultations, and discussions with counterparts from the IACHR, and will also engage with civil society actors working on the African human rights system.
Key areas of focus of peer exchanges with the IACHR will include, but are not limited to: sharing experiences and strategies in advancing the rights of all individuals; addressing contemporary/emerging human rights challenges; and identifying opportunities for joint initiatives and partnerships to address shared human rights concerns effectively.
The ACHPR views this mission as a testament to the enduring spirit of collaboration and solidarity among regional human rights bodies worldwide. Through this exchange, the ACHPR reaffirms its commitment to promoting and protecting human rights in Africa while contributing to the global human rights discourse.
