Press Release: Follow-up Meeting on the Validation of the Study on the Impact of COVID-19 on Indigenous Peoples in Africa 14 to 15 March 2024, Freetown, Sierra Leone

11 March 2024, Banjul, The Gambia – The Secretariat of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the Secretariat) wishes to inform the general public that the Chairperson of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations/Communities and Minorities in Africa and the Committee on the Protection of the Rights of People Living with HIV and Those at Risk, Vulnerable to and Affected by HIV, will be organizing a Follow Up Meeting on the Validation of the Study on the Impact of COVID-19 on Indigenous Peoples in Africa, from 14 to 15 March 2024, in Freetown, Sierra Leone

The Follow up Meeting, which is part of the promotion mandate of the Commission, is situated in the framework of Article 45 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the African Charter).

The overall objective of the follow-up meeting is to enrich and enhance the validated Study, and further formulate evidence-based policy recommendations aimed at enhancing the resilience of indigenous communities in future public health emergencies. The follow-up meeting is an opportunity to integrate into the Study, the feedback received from the participants of the validation meeting of the Study.

The Follow Up Meeting will be attended by Honourable Commissioner (Dr.) Litha Musyimi Ogana; Honourable Commissioner Marie Louise Abomo; Expert Members of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations/Communities and Minorities in Africa & the Committee on the Protection of the Rights of People Living with HIV and Those at Risk, Vulnerable to and Affected by HIV, Independent Experts and Staff of the Secretariat of the Commission.
