BANJUL, THE GAMBIA, 10th August 2023 - The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) is organizing a two-day Continental Workshop on the Status of Indigenous Populations/Communities in Africa under the mandate of the Working Group on Indigenous People and Minorities in Africa (WGIPM). The workshop is being convened by Hon. Commissioner Dr Litha Musymi-Ogana, the chairperson of the Working Group, from 25th to 26th August 2023
The WGIPM is convening this workshop with the overall objective of among others, mapping out indigenous communities on the Continent as well as unpacking the knowledge embedded in their ecosystem in general and particularly their indigenous knowledge, cultural and traditional practices, art and music, production systems, traditional leadership, environmental resilience, and livelihoods among others to unleash their potential, empower them and create development opportunities.
The conference will bring together State Representatives from all the regions on the continent, representatives from the African Union Organs and Sub-Regional Organizations, National Human Rights Institutions, Non-Governmental Organisations, UN Agencies, Academia, and other stakeholders.
