The African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (African Commission) was deeply saddened to learn about the death of Justice Youssoupha NDIAYE.
The African Commission joins his family, friends and colleagues in mourning the loss of a very illustrious, dedicated and passionate defender of human and peoples' rights.
Justice Youssoupha NDIAYE was one of the very first members of the African Commission, where he served from 1987 to 1999, and as its Chairperson in 1997. During his tenure, he served as Special Rapporteur for the drafting of the first Rules of Procedure of the African Commission. He also facilitated the hosting of the Second Session of the African Commission by the Government of the Republic of Senegal in 1988, where it considered and adopted its Rules of Procedure.
Justice NDIAYE was a brilliant jurist, and will always be remembered for his great human and intellectual qualities as well as his immense contribution in shaping the human rights landscape on the continent. His demise represents a huge loss for the African Commission and the human rights community at large.
The African Commission therefore wishes to extend its deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Justice NDIAYE.
