The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Commission) is deeply concerned by the events unfolding in the Republic of Zimbabwe since 14 November 2017, in relation to the intervention and take-over by the military, the confinement of President Robert Mugabe, and the consequent constitutional uncertainties in the country.
The African Commission, on the basis of its mandate to promote and protect human and peoples’ rights under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (African Charter), calls on all stakeholders to address the current situation and resolve the crisis peacefully, in a manner that complies with Zimbabwe’s human rights obligations under the African Charter and other applicable regional and international instruments ratified, including by ensuring that the human rights of all Zimbabweans are protected under all circumstances; as well as in strict adherence to the Constitution of Zimbabwe and other relevant instruments of the African Union, including the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance.
