The Secretariat of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the Commission) wishes to inform the public that, in commemoration of the World AIDS Day 2015, the Commission’s Committee for the Protection of the Rights of People living with HIV and those at Risk, vulnerable to and Affected by HIV (the Committee) will be organizing a workshop on "HIV, The Law and Human Rights in Africa: Key challenges and way forward on the margin of the International Conference on AIDS & STIs in Africa, which is taking place in Harare, Zimbabwe.

 

The workshop, which is part of the Commission’s promotional mandate, is being organized in accordance with Article 45 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and to give effect to ACHPR Res.163/XLVII which requires the Committee, amongst other things, to raise awareness on human rights violations specifically targeting the vulnerable group of people living with HIV/AIDS, those at risk, affected by and vulnerable to HIV/AIDS.

 

The workshop is aimed at giving the diverse stakeholders an opportunity to discuss and give their inputs to developments relating to the study on “HIV, the Law and Human Rights in the African Human Rights System: Key Challenges and Opportunities for Rights-based Responses to HIV,” which was mandated by Resolution ACHPR/Res.290 (EXT.OS/XVI) 2014.

 

The workshop will take place on 1st December 2015 from 16:45 to 18:15 at the Rainbow Towers Hotel & Conference Centre in Committee room 5a.
