Press Release - 4th Meeting of the Working Group on Extractive Industries, Environment and Human Rights Violations in Africa 14-15 July, Kigali, Rwanda

The Secretariat of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the Secretariat) wishes to inform the general public that, from 14 to 15 July 2014, it will be organizing the fourth Meeting of its Working Group on Extractive Industries, Environment and Human Rights Violations in Africa (the Working Group) in Kigali, Rwanda.

This Meeting, which is part of the promotion mandate of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (The African Commission) is being organized within the framework of Article 45 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the African Charter), and Resolution ACHPR/Res148 (XLVI) 09 which calls on the Working Group to, inter aliaexamine the impact of extractive industries in Africa within the context of the African Charter.

The Meeting will be attended by Members of the Working Group. Honourable Commissioner Pacifique Manirakiza, Chairperson of the Working Group will lead the deliberations, while a Legal Officer from the Secretariat of the African Commission will facilitate the Working Group’s work.
