Promotion Mission to Burkina Faso, 2 - 6 February 2009

On the invitation of the government of Burkina Faso, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) will undertake a mission to the country to promote the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the rights of indigenous populations in the country from 2 to 6 February 2009. The purpose of the mission will be to gather information and engage in a dialogue with all stakeholders on the human rights situation and the situation of indigenous populations in Burkina Faso.

The mission will be undertaken by Commissioner Zainabo Sylvie Kayitesi, Member of the ACHPR, Chairperson of the Working Group on the Death Penalty in Africa, and Commissioner in charge of promotional activities in Burkina Faso (Head of delegation) and Commissioner Soyata Maïga, Member of the ACHPR, Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa, and Member of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations/Communities in Africa. Commissioners Kayitesi and Maïga will be accompanied by Mr. Mohamed Khattali, Member and Expert of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations/Communities in Africa, Dr. Robert W. Eno and Mr. Nadjita F. Ngarhodjim, Legal Officers at the Secretariat of the ACHPR. The delegation will have discussions with various stakeholders, including the Government, civil society organizations, the academia, the judiciary, indigenous populations and any other persons/institutions capable of enlightening the ACHPR on the human rights situation and the situation of indigenous populations in the country.
