The Secretariat of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights wishes to inform the general public that at the invitation of the Government of the Republic of Ghana, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the African Commission) will undertake a Promotional Mission to the Republic of Ghana from 1 – 5 September, 2008.
The Mission, which is part of the Commission’s promotion mandate, is being undertaken in accordance with Article 45 (1) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, with the objective of engaging with relevant stakeholders to among other things, exchange views on ways and means of enhancing the enjoyment of human rights in the country.
The Mission will be undertaken by Commissioner Ngary Musa Bitaye, Member of the African Commission responsible for the promotion of human rights in Ghana, and the Chairperson of the African Commission’s Working Group on Indigenous Populations/Communities in Africa. He will be accompanied by Dr. Robert Eno and Mrs. Aminata Jawara Manga, Legal Officers at the Secretariat of the African Commission.
During the Mission, the delegation will meet with a cross-section of human rights actors in the country, especially those working in the field of human rights: including in particular, relevant government officials, members of parliament, members of the judiciary, the police, civil society organisations, political party leaders, and other individuals or institutions capable of enlightening the African Commission on the human rights situation in Ghana.
At the end of the mission, the preliminary findings will be discussed with relevant government authorities. A Press Conference will also be held to brief the press and the general public on these findings.
