On 22 August 2016, the Commissioner Rapporteur on the Human Rights Situation in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Chairperson of the Committee for the Prevention of Torture in Africa, together with the Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights Defenders in Africa, transmitted a Joint Letter of Appeal to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, regarding the alleged killings, beatings, excessive use of force, and arbitrary arrest of protestors.
