The Country Rapporteur of the Republic of Mali to the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (Honourable Commissioner Rémy Ngoy Lumbu) is deeply concerned by the socio-political situation prevailing in Mali for some time and particularly, the violence and degradation following the meeting of 10 July 2020 organized by the Mouvement du 5 Juin-Rassemblement des Forces Politiques  (M5-RFP).

He is profoundly saddened by the worsening situation on the ground and calls on all parties to exercise restraint while urging the Security Forces to respect human life, physical integrity, freedom of assembly and demonstration, and the right to property as protected by the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights and other relevant instruments.

The Rapporteur also calls on the authorities responsible for restoring order to ban the use of lethal force in the maintenance of law and order.

He reiterates his encouragement for all local, national and regional initiatives aimed at restoring security, peace and stability through constructive dialogue that could lead to appropriate solutions. The path of dialogue thus indicated should take into account the recommendations of the ECOWAS mission supported by the African Union and the United Nations for a lasting solution to the crisis at this particularly difficult time when the Malian people must be spared further suffering as they are already facing the trauma of COVID-19, terrorist attacks and intercommunal conflicts

The Rapporteur remains seized of the human rights situation in Mali.
